What can I do if I'm going to be evicted?

If your landlord has given you notice to leave you should seek advice as soon as possible to establish your rights and what steps you need to take next.

Depending on your type of tenancy your landlord will have to give you very specific eviction notices, it's worth checking that they have complied with the correct eviction procedure. Useful information can be found on the GOV.uk website for both private and council/housing association tenancies.

You can seek advice and support from your local housing needs/options team within your local authority. Search for contact details of your local council on the GOV.uk website.

Rent payments

If you're struggling to pay your rent, speak to your landlord before it becomes a problem. You can find information on ways to identify the problem, work out an plan, reduce your monthly out goings or boost your income on the MoneyHelper website. Your landlord is more likely to be willing to help if your are able to show that you have a plan in place to enable you to keep paying later down the line.

Shelter, Scotland Shelter, Citizens Advice and Housing Advice NI have information on how to approach your landlord and advice on how you may be able to get help with paying your rent. You can also find information on your rights and your options if you are evicted.
